For years, we’ve witnessed athletes getting stretched by a coach or personal trainer before an important sporting event—and while it might escape you at first glance, there is a profound advantage to the partner-assisted stretching techniques that have served top athletes well for decades.
Partner-assisted stretching (in particular the PNF method endorsed by Tailored Flexibility) can achieve a 10-15 degree greater range of motion in one session for clients. To accomplish this on your own, it would take about 4-6 weeks of stretching everyday. Your trainer also stretches muscles that cannot be stretched on your own—many of the positions are impossible to attain when self-stretching. And, when stretching by yourself, you contract other muscles: which means you never fully relax. By having a professional stretch you, you relax your total body.
